MacqLit Resumes

This week our teachers and learning support staff have resumed MacqLit with selected students from 7-10.

MacqLit is an explicit and systematic reading intervention program aimed at increasing students phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills.

The lessons are a structured, scripted program which work best when delivered to the students four times a week. The program content includes:

  • Letter-sound correspondences presented in an easy to hard sequence,
  • Strategies for decoding multi-syllable words,
  • Prefixes and suffixes, and
  • Generalising component skills through connected text reading.

At the end of the lesson students often partake in group literacy based games. These games allow both reading comprehension and communication skills to be developed. Our students, currently involved within these small groups, are showing impressive improvement in their skills. We are incredibly excited to be able to offer valuable opportunities to our students to grow and excel.

West Wyalong High School has seen growth in students' reading capabilities over recent years. Our teachers and support staff are eager to watch the improvement continue with our students this year.
