Year 11 students studying Legal Studies, Geography and Business Studies travelled to Sydney on the 11th to 13th of October to visit a range of places to use as case studies to support their HSC studies. For the first time, Henry Lawson High School's Business and Legal Studies classes joined the excursion accompanied by Mrs Griffiths.
The first place we visited on the excursion was the Parramatta family courts where they found out all about the operations of the family courts from the Senior Registrar Mr Paul Lelarge and Retired Senior Family Court Judge The Honory David Collier. Here they also learnt about the issues facing family courts in relation to access and efficiency, the importance of the registrar and alternative dispute resolution mechanism.
After our session at the courts, we battled the traffic on Parramatta road and headed into The Sydney harbour YHA where we walked down to Circular Quay to catch a ferry for a cruise over to Darling Harbour. This was a chance for students to experience Darling Harbour on our way to have dinner in china town to allow the geography students an opportunity to see an urban village.
On day two, we woke up nice and early to walk down to Martin Place in the hope of making an appearance on Sunrise. To our surprise, Jessica Mauboy was there signing autographs for the new Secret Daughter soundtrack and Sam Mack was out the front doing the weather. The students also got the opportunity to meet and get a photo with Kochie, Sam and Beretts.
From Sunrise, we walked down to the Sydney Tower eye to go through the kitchen and restaurant of Sydney Tower Dining. This was a great opportunity for the business studies students to utilise another case study while the geography students had a bird's eye view of the city while we all enjoyed a buffet lunch. In the afternoon the geography students walked over to Maritime Museum to do fieldwork investigating the urban dynamics of Pyrmont, while everyone else headed to the Police and Justice Museum to participate in a Trial Run and explore the museum.
Thursday night we caught the bus over to Manly to have dinner on the esplanade and then headed out to the Manly Quarantine Centre to participate in a Ghost tour. It was extremely interesting to hear about some of the inhumane operations of the centre and another great case study to demonstrate how land can be utilised if it is heritage listed.
On Friday, the legal studies and geography students walked over to the Wayside Chapel in Potts Point to hear all about the operation of the centre to utilise as a case study for social crime prevention, while the geography students were able to utilise Kings Cross as a great example of culture of place. They then caught the train over to Milsons Point to meet the Business Studies students who were learning about Luna Park as a business case study.
The excursion was an invaluable experience and thanks needs to go to Miss Maslin who drove the school bus to Grenfell to meet the coach at 6am on Wednesday morning and to Mr Duncan who drove the bus to Grenfell to pick us up on Friday night. Thankyou also to Mr Hague for supervising the excursion and Mrs Markham for organising the excursion.
